Google Unveils Android XR Glasses with Gemini AI for Real-Time Navigation, Translation & AR Experiences

At Google I/O 2025, Google introduced Android XR smart glasses powered by Gemini AI. These lightweight AR glasses offer real-time translation, navigation, and media streaming. Launching soon with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker.

Mountain View, CA – At its 2025 I/O developer conference, Google unveiled Android XR, a new extended reality platform designed to power next-generation wearable devices such as smart glasses and headsets. The announcement marks Google’s re-entry into the smart glasses space with a fresh focus on AI and immersive experiences.

The centerpiece of the announcement was the introduction of Android XR glasses, Google’s first major eyewear product since the discontinued Google Glass. This new device comes with full integration of Gemini AI, Google’s flagship artificial intelligence system.

Shahram Izadi, Vice President and General Manager of Android XR, emphasized the need for on-the-go accessibility.

“When you’re on the move, you want lightweight glasses that can deliver timely information without reaching for your phone,” said Izadi. “We built Android XR in collaboration with Samsung and optimized it for Snapdragon chips with Qualcomm.”

Android XR was first announced in December 2024, shortly after Meta released its updated Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses — signaling an intensifying rivalry in the wearable AI space.

Key Features of Android XR Glasses

Much like Meta’s offering, Google’s Android XR glasses feature:

• Built-in camera, microphones, and speakers
• Seamless Android device connectivity
• Real-time translation, navigation, and AI-powered assistance via Gemini AI
• Optional in-lens display for contextual visual information
• Capabilities to live stream, take photos, receive messages, and display Google Maps overlays

Google also demonstrated how Gemini AI transforms exploration into an interactive experience. For example, users can ask Gemini to virtually teleport them to any global location via Google Maps in XR, pulling up immersive content including videos, sites, and location-based data.

Availability and Partnerships

Though Google has not yet announced a specific release date or price, Izadi confirmed that the glasses will be launched through partnerships with premium eyewear brands:

• Gentle Monster (South Korea)
• Warby Parker (United States)

A developer platform for Android XR is also in the works, allowing third-party developers to begin building apps and experiences for the glasses later in 2025.

“We’re creating the software and reference hardware platform to enable the ecosystem to build great glasses with us,” said Izadi. “Our prototypes are already in the hands of trusted testers.”

With Android XR, Google aims to provide a more integrated, AI-driven wearable experience — setting the stage for a major showdown with Meta in the next phase of AR and AI-powered consumer tech.
